Syncopation: Life in the Key of Black Opening Reception @ Daniels Spectrum, Toronto, ON - Sat Feb 2nd! & Photo Exhibit, Feb 2nd - Mar 2nd!

There is the official history of Canada’s music industry, and then there’s the actual history.

From its beginning, the intriguing history of Canadian music has been told largely by−and for−a White population. For too long the accomplishments of individuals such as Cy McLean, Syd Blackwood, Alf Coward, the Wright Brothers and many others have been overlooked. Time for an accurate retelling. This fascinating photo exhibition and accompanying biographical sketches, Syncopation: Life in the Key of Black sets the record straight.

Syncopation: Life in the Key of Black celebrates the achievements, recognizes the struggles and solutes the underappreciated contributions of countless Black entertainers.

On display at the gallery during Black History Month 2013

Defining "Canadian Urban Fiction" Panel Discussion @ Malvern Branch, Toronto Public Library, Scarborough, ON - Sat Feb 2nd!

Who is telling the "urban" Canadian story, and how do we want our community and culture documented?

African-American authors like Sister Souljah, Omar Tyree, Terry McMillan, Zane, and K'wan have helped to develop a genre of fiction that is specific to their urban demographic and experience.

Through a series of questions and expert opinions, a panel of urban Canadian writers and cultural advocates will work towards creating a definition of what "Canadian Urban Fiction" is. Panelists include:

~TANIKA CHAMBERS (Christian Non-Fiction Author)
~TELISHA NG (Relationship Blogger)
~ANGELOT NDONGMO (Children's Author)
~CAMILLE RAMNATH (Urban Education Scholar/Teacher)
~D.A. BOURNE (Life Fiction Author)
~GENERAL (Hip Hop Artist)

Readers, writers, and book lovers will have the opportunity to discuss the Canadian urban identity, and the most effective and accurate way to document this culture through literature. (Moderated by journalist Angela Walcott and Stacey Marie Robinson--Kya Publishing.)

*Panelist Bios
Beth Lesser is a Canadian photographer whose work has appeared on countless album and CD covers, in various books, magazines and movies and are considered rare artifacts of the reggae and dancehall era from the late 1970s and 1980s. Lesser is also a prolific writer, who has completed four books on 1980s dancehall including King Jammy’s, Dance Hall: The Rise of Dance Hall Culture, The Legend of Sugar Minott and Youth Promotion, and Rub-a-Dub Style: The Roots of Modern Dancehall.
David Kingston got involved with reggae when he and his wife Beth Lesser started a fanzine for Augustus Pablo’s organization Rockers International in 1980. The fanzine soon became a magazine, Reggae Quarterly which began to explore dancehall territory. At this time, David Kingston was also hosting Reggae Showcase on CKLN community radio in Toronto, under the name Lord Selector.
Joseph “JO JO” Bennett began an early musical career in Jamaica. In 1980s, Bennett moved to Canada and started a music school with verteran Toronto musician Fergus Hambleton. The school lead to the creation of the pioneering, Juno award winning band The Sattalites.
Jerry Brown had an early start in Jamaica’s music industry as a key participant in reggae and the emerging dancehall scene. Brown moved to Canada in 1968 to become of the first artists performing in Toronto. His studio in Malton was a focal point for local reggae and the place where legendary Jamaican engineer and producer King Jammy served his apprenticeship.
Lisa Steele, Associate Chair of Visual Studies at Univeristy of Toronto, works in video, performance, installation and photo-text, to investigate issues of the body and the individual’s relationship to society. A co-founder of the media arts centre Vtape, Steele continues to be active in the artist-run culture.

Location:  Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street, West, Toronto, ON

Film Screening: Late Night Kuumba Films: The Story of Lover's Rock @ Harbourfront, Toronto, ON - Fri Feb 1st!

Often dubbed "romantic reggae," lover’s rock is a unique genre of British music, developed against a backdrop of racial tension, the Brixton riots and sound systems in the late '70s and '80s. It went from being a small UK scene to become a global phenomenon that defined a generation through artists such as UB40 and Maxi Priest.

Directed by award-winning director/producer Menelik Shabazz, The Story Of Lover’s Rock combines comedy, live performance, interviews and archival footage to shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Contributors to the documentary include UB40, Maxi Priest, Levi Roots, Linton Kwesi Johnson, comedians Angie Le Mar, Robbie G and Eddie Nestor, alongside new artists such as Ava Leigh and Lovella Ellis.

Thank You For Your Support Toronto from Team Michael Charles!

A message on behalf of Team Michael Charles:
------------------------------------

On behalf of Team Michael Charles, I would like to thank everyone who came out, contributed, volunteered, supported and prayed for Michael and our event on Sunday. The overwhelming feedback is that it was a success - both monetarily and emotionally.

We are still tallying, but early numbers show we raised an estimated $20,000 in two weeks for Michael's medical treatment. This includes a very generous donation of $5,000 from comedian Russell Peters, who was a surprise guest at the fundraiser.

We couldn't have done this without the prize donations from our sponsors for the raffles, silent and live auctions. We couldn't have done this without complimentary samplings from Jamaica House Kitchen and Dulce Pasion. We couldn't have done this without DJ Mark Anthony and his crew keeping the atmosphere lively with the right music playing all night. We couldn't have done this without Lawrence, Ron, David and Courtney capturing the moments on camera (look for the pictures to be up on the website www.teammichaelcharles.com
and Facebook soon!). We couldn't have done this without all the performers, models, poets and comedians who represented on stage. We couldn't have done this without all the DJ's and promoters uniting to get the word out. We couldn't have done this without the media coverage from G98.7, CHIN, Citytv, The Caribbean Current, Caribbean Graphic and CTV Toronto.

But most of all, we couldn't have done this in 15 DAYS without Towa Beer, Roger Dundas, Camille Dundas, Eddie Williams, Rhonda Britton, Nicole Waldron, George Fynn, Kathi Nicoll, Cliff Williams, Myana Bruce Mckinney, Robert Small, Barry Boothe, Dave Reid, Monique Edwards, Bonnie Parker, Patsy Scott, Darryl Darke, Sandy Hue, Colleen, Conroy, Silburn, Catfish, Mark and Farley.

But most of all we couldn't have done it without YOU ... who turned out, donated from the heart and packed the house to show support for Michael.

I'll leave you with a paraphrase of an observation Michael made on stage Sunday night: I've heard silly things, like the Black community isn't united. Whoever said that isn't in this room tonight.

Thank you and God Bless

Fennella Bruce
Event Organizer, Team Michael Charles
